Staff benefits

All BGS staff enjoy wide a range of benefits in addition to their salary, aimed at promoting a positive work–life balance. Benefits include a range of flexible working opportunities, a generous annual leave entitlement and auto enrolment into a very competitive pension scheme.

Annual Leave

All staff are entitled to 30 days annual leave per annum plus 10.5 public and privilege days (pro rata for part–time staff).

Special Leave

Paid special leave may be granted to assist with unforeseen domestic events, medical appointments, some public duties and, in some cases, for study and exams.

Sick Pay

BGS operates a sick pay scheme with generous entitlements and a professional Occupational Health Service.

Career breaks and unpaid special leave

Subject to operational requirements, these may be granted for a variety of circumstances including voluntary work, study and caring responsibilities.

Bonus/Voucher Scheme

Staff are eligible to receive a bonus either as an individual or as a member of a team. Awards under the scheme vary from £50 to £1,000.

Pension Scheme

Staff are automatically enrolled into a very competitive pension scheme provided by the Civil Service Pension Scheme and administered by MyCSP. Welfare Service

As a responsible and caring organisation, BGS aims to ensure that staff are fully supported in all areas of working life. The confidential BGS Welfare Service exists to support the emotional and mental wellbeing of our staff throughout their career with us.

Learning & Development

BGS recognises that its staff are its most important resource and that staff development is essential for the organisation to achieve its objectives. BGS therefore aims to provide, wherever possible, learning and development opportunities which:

Pre–Retirement Assistance

All staff approaching retirement have access to a two–day workshop to help consider the financial and life changing aspects of this important event. If pre–retirement is connected with a voluntary redundancy scheme, access is also given to commercially provided outplacement support.

Childcare Voucher Scheme

BGS operates a government salary sacrifice scheme that gives you a cash boost if you pay for registered or approved childcare across the UK. Staff can take a proportion of their earnings (tax and national insurance free) to pay for the care of children up to the age of 15.

Trade Unions

BGS has two recognised Trade Unions (PCS and Prospect) who are fully engaged in supporting and representing their members.

Professional Membership Fees

BGS are committed to supporting staff who are accredited members of professional bodies to contribute to their ongoing continuous development. This includes re–imbursement of annual membership fees for one professional body per person.


At present, we are able to offer staff free parking at our offices in Keyworth, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Sports & Social Clubs

All BGS staff automatically become members of the BGS sports and social club. They are also eligible to join the Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC Sports & Leisure).

At the Keyworth site staff can use the outdoor courts for tennis and the indoor sports centre for badminton, aerobics and football. For a small additional fee staff can also join the fitness centre which is fully equipped with high quality gym equipment and air conditioning. The Keyworth social club also organises around 20 subsidised events each year including sports competitions, theatre trips, wine tastings and coach trips.

In Edinburgh, you can access the Heriot–Watt University sports facilities which as a student facility, is competitively priced. The Edinburgh social club also organises a range of subsidised events throughout the year. Staff in Wallingford can benefit from discounted gym membership and a sports and social club with subsidised swimming, yoga/Pilates and five–a–side football activities.


We have a geological library, where all staff have digital access to the extensive library resources held at Keyworth. The library at Wallingford has a wide range of publications on hydrology and hydrogeology.

Staff Restaurant

A reasonably priced staff restaurant (Keyworth and Wallingford), provides cooked meals and snacks.

Civil Service Retirement Fellowship

The Civil Service Retirement Fellowship is a registered charity that is dedicated to helping former civil servants, their partners, widows, widowers and dependants. Its principal aim is to help members through friendship and support to enjoy a better and more fulfilling retirement.

Independent financial advice

Independent financial advice is available at regular on–site clinics in Keyworth and approximately twice a year in our Edinburgh office.
